An American in Paris

Re-watching An American in Paris, I didn't like it as much as I thought it would the first time around. As it stars Gene Kelly, I was expecting another "Singin' in the rain". Watching it again, i can see that this is a gentler, subtler film. The dancing is at times, breathtaking, especially the ballet sequence at the end. It features a Gershwin soundtrack and the introduction of Leslie Caron.

An Education

This was about a sheltered, intellectual schoolgirl in 60's England who falls in love with an older man who is not all that he seems to be. What makes this movie so refreshing is that instead of the standard overbearing authoritarian parents I expected to see, her parents are as sucked in to the charm of this man as she is.
I knew this movie was going to be good once I saw the trailer because Nick Hornby, one of my favorite authors, wrote the screenplay. It did not disappoint.

Sandra Brown

Sandra Brown's writing is crude and morbid. some of her novels are downright offensive. For some odd reason, hookers are always getting killed in her novels. The occasional sex scenes have made me laugh more than once. So why have I read most of her novels??

I guess because she's a great storyteller.

Lolita (1962)

This was one of the best movies I've seen in a while...it's a tale of a man's obsession for his teenage stepdaughter. James Mason gives a stellar performance as Humbert Humbert, and sue Lyons as Lolita was stunning. Its a rare movie that clocks in over two hours and yet is gripping the entire time. I've seen a few Kubrick movies and this is my favorite so far.

The Women (2008)

Dreadful. That's the best way I can describe this movie. It was a waste of talent, contained every cliche in the book, and the worst part is that it's so smug, you know that they thought they were actually making some kind of statement...

Two For the Road

Watched Two for the Road...I was going to like it anyway because it's an Audrey movie, but it was actually pretty good. Not the typical Audrey movie, no real big romantic scenes, no Givenchy, no tiaras (ok, one tiara, come on, this was an Audrey Hepburn movie), it was pretty much two hours of watching a couple disintegrate before your eyes. My first reaction was that I'm glad I watched this while I'm single, I'd think that it'd depress me if i watched it as part of a couple. But surprisingly, it ended happily (come on, this was an Audrey Hepburn movie), which I love, so I was very pleased.

The patron saint of purple

Watching Purple Rain, I never get sick of this movie...especially the end when he sings the title track, and the part where he throws the earring and Appolonia catches it behind him..Prince is a musical genius..

mad men

Just watch it.

nothing new

Can't really watch much lately, mostly soaps (don't knock them 'til you try them). I'm trying to read Revolutionary Road but i've been getting distracted from it easily. Reading the Tao Te Ching, I love it...Oh yeah, i did see What Happens In Vegas, and it was way better than i expected.

Raintree County

Pretty boring. Basically it's about a guy who breaks up with his sweetheart to marry a crazy bitch...the actors were good but the movie really did suck, I had to watch it in sections because it was so boring.

From here to eternity

A little bit overrated but entertaining. Frank Sinatra really overacted, it was kind of funny. Not much else to say about it.

February boredom

I haven't posted on here in a while...I've been watching Mad Men and it's one of the best shows I've ever watched..I read a book, Remember Me, it was funny but didn't really have any substance....90210 is actually getting less boring..no ghosts on Grey's this week, that's always good...

free time!

I've had free time finally after weeks of nonstop work....So I watched movies today.
After 2 months of sitting in my DVR I saw an old movie called Stage Door. It starred Ginger Rogers and Katherine Hepburn and Lucille Ball had a supporting role. It was pretty good, about a bunch of young actresses trying to make it in NY. there was a lot of witty wisecracking going on, which of course i loved... It was nothing groundbreaking but it was sweet and understated. It really showed the complexity of the female friendship/rivalry. As with most old movies, I got jealous over the clothes...
